The whole of Greater Manchester’s tram network has been shut down because of a technical fault.
Control room staff lost visible sight of trams although drivers remained in radio contact, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said.
A spokeswoman said the failure, which is not being linked to any cyber-attack, was discovered at about 15:50 BST on Sunday.
Technicians are due to work through the night to try to find the fault.
“Due to a communication fault, all lines are suspended,” the company said in a statement.
The firm said no trams would be running until the issue had been resolved and added: “Replacement bus services across the network and [some] rail services are accepting tickets on the Airport line, East Manchester and Rochdale.”

In a tweet, Manchester Metrolink said it was “unable to make announcements or update information displays” at tram stops.
At about 22:00 Metrolink said: “Technicians will work through the night, but until the fault is identified there is no timescale for recovery of the systems.”
Frustrated travellers contacted the BBC to share their stories.
One, who bought tickets just before the service stopped, said: “I was stranded with three small children.
“I ended up having to pay for a taxi which cost me a further £7 on top of my tram ticket.”
Another simply described it as “a shambles”.
Metrolink apologised for the inconvenience and advised passengers to check its website for updates.
